Alva Aves was born in Six Mile Bottom (Chesterton Q3-1897 3B:444), son of Robert and Eliza AVES (née BLINCOE).
1901 census...Aged 3, Alva was at London Road, Six Mile Bottom, with his father Robert AVES [43] cattleman on farm, born Bottisham; his mother Eliza [41] born Swaffham; brothers Robert J [21] and James W [19] both bricklayer's labourers, born Bottisham, brothers Stephen [14], Herbert [12] and Ernest [7], all three born in Swaffham and sisters Dorah [9] born Swaffham and Blanche [6 months)born Six Mile Bottom. 1911 census...Aged 14, Alvah, a farm labourer, was at Hall Farm, Stetchworth with his parents; brothers James William, Stephen and Ernest, and his sisters Dora and Blanche. On the pension card (1918) his mother was at Hall Farm, Red Lodge and and after her death, father was at High Street, Bottisham |

He enlisted in Newmarket. The 2nd Suffolks were having a quiet time early in 1915 in the Vierstraat area, their main pre-occupation was trying to keep dry as the trenches were more like mud baths. No serious raids or attacks took place or had to be repelled. Normal attrition though saw periodic casualties. Bailleul was an important railhead and casualty clearing station area. Since Alvah's service records have not been found, nothing more specific can be recorded. |
